A song of ice and fire suffers from a severe lack of imagination. It has good prose, but overall, it is a pretty boring fantasy series. Dragons are big flying lizards, undead are boring death machines, the magic is bland. The witcher main saga is good, but the short stories are great. They have amazing dialogue, and are full of imagination.
The when you're finished with the show, the books will provide you with more plot, more characters (the show tends to either cut or merge super-minor ones), more worldbuilding ( lore for e.g. tends to suffer in the show). Plus, if you read the books first, you'll probably nitpick and hate at most of the changes the show does.

In Game of Thrones, what is the level of 'Fantasy Magic' like in the books compared to the show? So in the show, I saw an interview once where the showrunners said the audience got turned off in the first few seasons by things like the Red Witch giving birth to a monster, and so they concionsley turned down the magic.
They know their history, after a fashion. They know that every time the King beyond the wall has invaded the 7 kingdoms, they get slaughtered and driven back. They are choosing to fight and maybe, this time it will be different, because if they stay, they will die a cold, brutal death.
A FENGER IN THA BUM. The thing about book vs show Euron is, book Euron’s claim that he’s the best captain on the 7 seas and has been all over the world is very clear through Martin’s depiction of the kingsmoot. As opposed to show Euron, who is making these claims and we’re just kind of taking his word for it.
For me, time didn't change anything. I really love the books and I loved the show until things started to make no sense and the show was then, in the end, ruined completely. Of course some scenes were spectacular, but the overall anticipation and excitement I always felt when watching a new episode were gone.

Lady was executed at the Inn at the Crossing which is the middle of the Riverlands. So roughly halfway to Kings Landing, two weeks away on foot. Catelyn took a ship so she was much fucking faster than Ned was. The show wasn't implying events were taking place one after the other like it is right now. -3.
The books of A Song Of Ice And Fire are told from the perspective of an array of characters; in the first book, that’s almost exclusively the Stark family (Ned, Catelyn, Arya, Sansa, Bran, and
I watched Game of Thrones before I started reading ASoIaF and found that all of the characters were really well done in the show. They're pretty much represented the way they are in the books (except that Catelyn is like 100x more crazy about Bran's accident in the book). The only character that seems completely different to me was Renly.
I watched the show a few months back and then started reading the book series and wished I had read the book first because its kind of frustrating…
I’ll just hit some of the big points because listing all the differences is border-line impossible. •Jon is a way better character in the books. He’s smarter, more ruthless, and more pragmatic than his show counterpart (particularly in the last couple of seasons). He’s basically Ned 2.0 in the best way possible.
